West Takeoff

Merkur's West Takeoff is right next to the cable car's upper station. It is big enough for up to four wings at once. Assuming usual westerly winds, the takeoff's center will be the easiest spot to use. Please prepare your instruments and strap in your harness before unfolding your wing.

The takeoff's upper part (yellow wing on the photo) is nearly flat, the rest is very steep. After some meters you will notice an edge (the green/brownish area on the photo). You have to be airborne when you pass it, or abort immediately. The area below is free from trees, but not from thorny brushwood.

We have wind socks on both sides of the takeoff, plus some small ribbons on the cable car station's flag poles. These indicators can be misleading if the wind is coming from the east. If in doubt, climb the tower and check there. You can also use our Weather Station if available.

Merkur is a conical hill, hence there will be venturies both north and south of the takeoff. Avoid getting sucked into them, or getting to the LZ can turn out difficult.

Expect lee rotors if the wind is coming from south west or north west. Please have a radio and get the mandatory site briefing before your first flight.

Happy landings!
